IEA and the TIMSS & PIRLS International Study Center at Boston College are pleased to announce the publication of the TIMSS 2027 Assessment Frameworks. IEA TIMSS (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study) is a long-standing international assessment of mathematics and science at the fourth and eighth grades, conducted every four years since 1995. More than 70 countries participate in TIMSS to benchmark their education systems and inform policy and practice.
Building on the successful transition to digital assessment in 2023, TIMSS 2027 marks the second fully digital cycle, introducing more interactive tasks, adaptive testing, and enhanced automated scoring. The updated mathematics and science frameworks reflect current global priorities while ensuring continuity for measuring achievement trends.
The Mathematics Framework emphasizes number, measurement and geometry, and data, alongside cognitive domains of knowing, applying, and reasoning, with new items highlighting computational thinking and real-world applications. The Science Framework covers biology, physical science, chemistry, and earth science, integrating environmental knowledge and science practices. Together, these frameworks provide a robust foundation for assessing student achievement while capturing emerging priorities in mathematics and science education worldwide.
