Volume 3: Experiencing Democracy in the Classroom
Classrooms offer unique opportunities for students to engage with diverse perspectives, express their views, and learn to collaborate.
Volume three of the IEA Research for Educators series explores how educators can encourage democratic learning through teaching practices, school culture, and community engagement, combining research on civic and citizenship education (CCE) with practical examples and reflection.
This volume offers a unique set of open-access resources for teachers and teacher trainers based on insights from IEA's International Civic and Citizenship Education Study (ICCS):
- Theory: Volume three provides a theoretical reference for CCE and democratic learning environments, drawing from ICCS
- Practice: The highlighted chapter five contains examples of CCE activities in four participating ICCS countries
- Digest: An IEA Teacher Snippet offers a digestible format to support engagement with the theory
- DIY: Downloadable, ready-to-use classroom activities from chapter five to support the application of the research
Volume 3: Experiencing Democracy in the Classroom
This open-access volume aims to support teachers with tools and examples of practices to facilitate democratic learning environments, strengthen civic learning, and foster students’ attitudes and engagement in the classroom. Schools are among the most relevant contexts for students to practice citizenship firsthand. By building democratic learning environments, schools provide meaningful opportunities for students to develop civic knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors and, ultimately, to experience democracy.
